Innovation That Moves With You

For more than 35 years, Cymed has been creating ostomy solutions designed around the people who use them.

Our story began with Dianne Eastman, a cytologist, inventor, and ostomate who believed there had to be a better way. When existing ostomy products failed to meet her needs, she developed solutions of her own. Her pioneering work with thin, flexible membrane technology led to a 1987 U.S. patent and, in 1988, the introduction of the MicroSkin® name for ostomy pouches.

Dianne’s philosophy was rooted in experience: understand the challenge, solve the problem, and make everyday life better for the person wearing the product. That philosophy continues to drive Cymed’s mission.

Our Approach to Better Ostomy Care

Patient-Inspired Innovation

Cymed’s product development has always centered on real-world ostomy challenges. In the 1990s, Cymed developed The Original Ile-Sorb™ after research and testing showed an opportunity to better manage liquid output inside the pouch.

Designed for Comfort

MicroSkin is transparent, ultra-thin, flexible, breathable, waterproof, latex-free, and hypoallergenic. Its moisture-vapor permeability helps create a more comfortable environment for the skin, while its transparency allows the skin beneath the barrier to be observed.

Made for Real Life

Cymed continues to develop and manufacture its products in-house in Sarasota, Florida. Today, the brand offers one-piece and two-piece systems, drainable and closed pouches, urostomy and pediatric options, and solutions for a range of ostomy needs.

Our Story Dr. Walt Leise

A New Chapter in Sarasota

In 2019, Cymed became part of Sarasota Medical Products (SMP), a Sarasota, Florida-based, veteran-owned medical-device manufacturer founded in 2010.

SMP was founded by Dr. Walter F. Leise III, whose background in science, research, manufacturing, and medical-device development has helped shape the company's approach to innovation. His father, Walter F. Leise Jr., was also instrumental in building the company's foundation and bringing decades of medical-device experience to SMP.

Designed With Patients in Mind

Today, Cymed's research, development, and manufacturing continue in Sarasota under Sarasota Medical Products. The combination of Cymed's decades of ostomy experience and SMP's expertise in medical-grade adhesives, hydrocolloids and medical-device manufacturing allows us to continue developing products with the same purpose that inspired its inventor, to help patients live a life without limitations.
